Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is a plant from the Cannabaceae family cultivated primarily for its bast fiber. It is often confused with cannabis varieties that produce marijuana and hashish. Although all three products—hemp, marijuana, and hashish—contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound, the variety of cannabis grown for hemp contains only trace amounts of THC compared to those cultivated for marijuana or hashish.
The hemp plant is a stout, aromatic, erect annual herb. Its slender, cane-like stalks are hollow except at the tip and base. The leaves are compound and palmate, while the flowers are small and greenish-yellow.
Hemp originated in Central Asia, with its cultivation for fiber recorded in China as early as 2800 BCE. It spread to Mediterranean countries early in the Christian era and throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. In the 1500s, it was introduced to Chile, and a century later, it reached North America.
Hemp is cultivated as an annual plant in temperate zones, reaching heights up to 5 meters (16 feet). Optimal growth occurs in sandy loam with good drainage, requiring an average monthly rainfall of at least 65 mm (2.5 inches) during the growing season. Crops grown for fiber are densely sown, producing plants that typically measure 2–3 meters (6–10 feet) tall with minimal branching. In contrast, plants cultivated for oilseed are spaced farther apart, resulting in shorter, multi-branched specimens.
For the best yield and quality in fiber production, harvesting should occur soon after the plants reach maturity, indicated by full blossoms and the shedding pollen of male plants. While some plants are pulled up by hand, they are more commonly cut about 2.5 cm (1 inch) above the ground.
Fiber is extracted from the stalks through a series of processes, including retting, drying, and crushing, followed by a shaking process that separates the fiber from the woody portion, releasing long, fairly straight strands known as "line." These fiber strands typically exceed 1.8 meters (5.8 feet) in length and consist of individual cylindrical cells with irregular surfaces.
Hemp fiber is stronger and less flexible than flax, generally appearing in shades of yellow, green, or dark brown/gray. Because it does not bleach easily to lighter shades, it is rarely dyed. Its strength and durability make it suitable for cordage—such as twine, yarn, rope, cable, and string—as well as for artificial sponges and coarse fabrics like burlap and canvas. Specially processed hemp can achieve a whitish color and attractive luster, making it suitable for clothing fabrics similar to linen, and it can also be used for shoes.
Additionally, hemp fiber is used in the production of recyclable and biodegradable bioplastics, depending on the formulation. The innovative material "hempcrete," a composite of hemp and lime binder, serves as an alternative to traditional concrete in non-load-bearing applications. Hemp also offers a sustainable alternative to wood pulp in paper making and is frequently used as an eco-friendly insulation material in buildings.
